Summary

Rectangular fields from linear accelerators can differ in output (cGy/mu) compared to equivalent square fields. Using the lower collimator jaws for elongated fields introduces a few percent error, necessitating specific guidelines for high-energy linacs.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Physics
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Radiotherapy Physics

Background:

  • Accurate dose delivery in radiation therapy is critical for effective cancer treatment.
  • Linear accelerators (linacs) are widely used for external beam radiotherapy.
  • The output of radiation fields from linacs can be influenced by various factors, including collimator settings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and quantify the output variations between rectangular and equivalent square fields from a linear accelerator.
  • To analyze the impact of upper and lower collimator jaw settings on radiation output for different X-ray energies.
  • To provide recommendations for optimizing rectangular field setup in high-energy linac treatments.

Main Methods:

  • Measured radiation output (cGy/mu) for rectangular fields of varying dimensions using 4, 6, and 24 MV X-rays.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Compared the output of rectangular fields with their calculated equivalent square fields.
  • Evaluated the effect of using the lower collimator jaws for setting the longer dimension of rectangular fields.
  • Main Results:

    • Significant output variations were observed between rectangular and equivalent square fields.
    • Using the lower collimator jaws for the longer dimension of elongated fields introduced a few percent error in output.
    • These discrepancies were noted for specific X-ray energies (4, 6, and 24 MV).

    Conclusions:

    • The equivalent square method may not accurately represent the output for all rectangular fields, especially elongated ones.
    • Errors in radiation output can occur if specific collimator jaw configurations are not carefully considered.
    • Development of specific guidelines for setting rectangular fields on high-energy linacs is recommended to ensure dose accuracy.
