It is obvious that we are influenced by those around us, but in the early to mid 1900's, psychologists began to study how potent social influence can be on our thoughts and behaviors. Motivated in part by attempts to explain the behaviors of Nazi soldiers in World War II, one topic of considerable interest at the time in psychology was conformity, the phenomenon in which people match their attitudes, behaviors, or beliefs to...

Multidisciplinary Approach to Obesity Management: A Case Report

922
Obesity care is best delivered after in-depth initial screening and evaluation, using an individualized approach comprising multidisciplinary care, evidence-based lifestyle behavioral change strategies, and frequent follow-up. We illustrate a successful 6 month course of weight loss treatment, resulting in reversal of obesity-related chronic conditions and improvement in diet, sleep, mood, and physical fitness.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health Nutrition
  • Behavioral Science
  • Pediatric Obesity Prevention

Background:

  • Interactive Nutrition Comics for Urban Minority Youth (Intervention INC) is a web-based tool designed to aid dietary self-management and reduce obesity risk in urban minority preadolescents.
  • Recruitment and retention of participants are significant challenges in intervention studies, particularly within diverse urban populations.
  • This study focuses on detailing the recruitment and retention strategies employed in a pilot randomized study of Intervention INC.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the recruitment and retention activities undertaken during the Intervention INC pilot study.
  • To identify and discuss the challenges encountered during participant recruitment and retention.
  • To share lessons learned and effective strategies for engaging urban minority families in health intervention research.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited Black/African American and Latino children (ages 9-12) and their guardians from East Harlem/Harlem, New York.
  • Employed community flyering, convenient study locations, incentives, and community/school partnerships for recruitment.
  • Utilized flexible scheduling, reminders, incremental compensation, and consistent staff for retention, with data collection at four time points (baseline to 3-month follow-up).

Main Results:

  • Eighty-nine dyads enrolled and were randomized; recruitment sources included community events (39%) and flyering (34%).
  • High survey completion rates were maintained throughout the study (T2: 87%, T3: 89%, T4: 84%).
  • High satisfaction reported by parents (97% received enough information) and children (81% very/extremely satisfied with staff interaction).

Conclusions:

  • Community events and flyering proved effective for recruiting urban Black/African American and Latino families.
  • A multi-faceted approach to retention was successful in engaging these specific high-risk populations.
  • Identified successful strategies applicable to similar high-risk urban minority populations in health intervention research.
