Area of Science:

  • Oral pathology
  • Dermatopathology
  • Histopathology

Background:

  • Graphite tattoos on the gingiva are rare and often misdiagnosed as amalgam tattoos.
  • Accurate histopathologic diagnosis is crucial for differentiating benign pigmented lesions from malignant ones.

Observation:

  • A case of an asymptomatic gray-black macule on the maxillary anterior gingiva in a 24-year-old female.
  • Clinical examination and radiographs did not reveal radiopaque foreign particles or bone pathology.

Findings:

  • The incineration method was employed for histopathologic differential diagnosis.
  • This method successfully distinguished graphite tattoo from melanin, as carbon is eliminated by incineration, unlike melanin.

  • The incineration method offers a valuable tool for differentiating graphite tattoos from other pigmented lesions in oral pathology.
  • Accurate diagnosis of gingival pigmented lesions is essential, as clinical differentiation from early melanoma can be challenging.
