Summary

Nail changes like onycholysis and subungual hemorrhage can occur with paclitaxel chemotherapy. Early intervention with topical antifungals and oral antibiotics can manage these side effects, allowing patients to complete treatment.

  • Nail changes are an uncommon but recognized side effect of chemotherapy.
  • Docetaxel is more frequently associated with nail toxicities than paclitaxel.

Observation:

  • Two gynecological cancer patients developed various nail problems during paclitaxel treatment.
  • Observed nail issues included onycholysis, subungual hemorrhage, onychophosis, dystrophy, Beau's lines, pigmentation, and melanonychia.

Findings:

  • Topical antifungal cream and oral antibiotics effectively halted the progression of nail disease.
  • Both patients successfully completed their paclitaxel chemotherapy regimen without interruption.

Implications:

  • Gynecological oncologists must be aware of paclitaxel-induced nail toxicities.
  • Prophylactic and therapeutic interventions are crucial to prevent severe complications like cellulitis and sepsis.
