Properly sized facemasks are crucial for effective neonatal stabilization. This study found that 42mm and 50mm round facemasks fit most near-term and term infants, respectively, improving ventilation seal.
Area of Science:
- Neonatal care
- Pediatric respiratory support
- Medical device sizing
Background:
- Inappropriately sized facemasks can compromise ventilation during neonatal resuscitation.
- Accurate facemask selection is vital for effective neonatal stabilization.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine appropriate round facemask sizes for near-term and term infants.
- To measure facial dimensions using 2D and 3D imaging for facemask selection.
Main Methods:
- Prospective observational study involving infants born at 34-41 weeks' gestation.
- Utilized 2D and 3D imaging to measure facial dimensions (nasion to gnathion).
- Compared infant facial measurements with outer diameters of standard round facemasks.
Main Results:
- 102 infants were analyzed; mean gestational age was 37.9 weeks.
- 3D imaging revealed larger facial dimensions than 2D imaging (mean difference of 3mm).
- 50mm masks fit 61% of term infants; 42mm masks fit 72% of near-term infants (34-36 weeks GA).
Conclusions:
- 60mm round facemasks are generally too large for newborns.
- 42mm and 50mm round facemasks provide a better fit for near-term and term infants, respectively.
- 3D imaging offers superior visualization of anatomical structures for precise measurement.

Nasal Cannula
A nasal cannula is a lightweight tube split at one end into two prongs and placed in the nostrils. It is typically used to deliver low to medium levels of oxygen.
Suggested flow rate: The suggested flow rate for a nasal cannula typically ranges between 1 and 6 L/min.

Development of Immunocompetence
The initial cells that migrate from the fetal thymus settle within the skin and epithelial tissues lining the mouth, digestive tract, and in females, the uterus and vagina. These cells, including skin-based dendritic cells, serve as antigen-presenting cells, playing a key role in T cell activation.
Subsequent T...
