Introspection01:29

Introspection

211
Introspection, long upheld as a reliable route to self-knowledge, involves examining one's thoughts, emotions, and mental processes. It underpins many psychological practices, from mindfulness meditation to psychotherapy and self-help strategies. However, empirical evidence challenges the accuracy of introspection as a means of understanding oneself.Limitations of Introspective InsightSeminal work by Nisbett and Wilson demonstrated that individuals are frequently unaware of the true causes...

Self-Awareness and Its Effects01:21

Self-Awareness and Its Effects

283
Self-awareness is a psychological state in which the individual becomes the focal point of their attention. This inward focus transforms the self into an object of contemplation and assessment, influencing how individuals perceive their actions and their alignment with personal and societal standards.Triggers and Contexts for Self-AwarenessSelf-awareness can be activated by external stimuli that make individuals visually or audibly aware of themselves, such as mirrors, cameras, or recordings.

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

5.7K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model01:29

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model

287
The Self-Evaluation Maintenance (SEM) model offers a psychological framework to understand how individuals’ self-esteem is influenced by the achievements of others, particularly those with whom they share close personal bonds. The SEM model operates when personal rather than social identity guides individuals. Central to this model is the notion that individuals have an inherent desire to preserve a favorable self-image, which is continuously shaped by interpersonal comparisons and...

Self-Regulation01:25

Self-Regulation

226
Self-regulation, also known as self-control, encompasses a range of cognitive and behavioral processes that allow individuals to adjust their internal states and outward actions to align with socially acceptable norms and long-term goals. It plays a fundamental role in adaptive functioning, from resisting impulsive behaviors to persisting through challenging tasks. While its benefits are widely recognized, self-regulation is not limitless. Muraven and Baumeister's theory posits that...

Social Foundations of Self III: Self-Evaluation

184
Self-evaluation is the process by which individuals assess their abilities, behaviors, and characteristics based on feedback from others. Charles H. Cooley observed that a person’s self-perception is primarily influenced by how others see and judge them. He suggested that individuals form their identities based on their interpretations of others' reactions. As a result, social interactions play a crucial role in shaping self-esteem and personal identity. These external evaluations often...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Psychometrics
  • Professional Development

Background:

  • Physician professional behavior is under scrutiny, necessitating self-directed learning in medical students.
  • Self-regulated learning is crucial for professional development and lifelong learning in medicine.
  • Evaluating tools to assess medical students' readiness for self-regulation is important.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the validity and reliability of the Persian version of the Self-Reflection and Insight Scale (SRIS).
  • To assess medical students' readiness for self-regulation using the SRIS.
  • To establish SRIS as a psychometrically sound instrument for medical education research.

Main Methods:

  • The SRIS was translated into Persian following established guidelines.
  • 136 medical students completed the translated SRIS questionnaire.
  • Reliability was assessed using internal consistency and intraclass correlation; validity was examined through content validity, confirmatory factor analysis, and exploratory factor analysis (EFA).

Main Results:

  • The Persian SRIS demonstrated desirable content validity.
  • The four-factor model showed good reliability with Cronbach's alpha of 0.87 and Intraclass Correlation Coefficient of 0.79.
  • Exploratory factor analysis confirmed a well-structured four-factor model, indicating good construct validity.

Conclusions:

  • The Persian version of the SRIS is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing self-regulation in medical students.
  • The scale's four-factor structure is supported by the data.
  • The SRIS can be utilized to measure medical students' readiness for self-regulated learning.
