Summary

Orbital floor Gelfilm implants can lead to delayed cystic lesions in the anterior orbit. Surgical excision of these Gelfilm cysts improved associated motility disturbances in two patients.

Background:

Orbital floor reconstruction frequently utilizes Gelfilm implants.
Delayed complications following orbital floor repair require ongoing investigation.

Observation:

Two patients presented with cystic lesions in the anterior orbit 21 and 26 months post-repair of blow-out fractures using Gelfilm.
Both patients experienced motility disturbances associated with the orbital lesions.

Findings:

Surgical excision revealed cystic lesions filled with gelatinous material, consistent with partially absorbed Gelfilm.
Histological examination showed a fibrous capsule, with cyst contents dissolving during fixation.

Implications:

Gelfilm implants may contribute to the formation of delayed orbital cysts.

Related Experiment Videos

Surgical intervention for these cysts can resolve motility disturbances.

Further research into the long-term behavior of Gelfilm in orbital reconstructions is warranted.
