Two novel ent-atisane diterpenes, sebiferumnins K and L, were identified from Sapium sebiferum branches. This research expands the understanding of diterpenoid compounds found in this plant species.
Area of Science:
- Natural Product Chemistry
- Phytochemistry
- Organic Chemistry
Background:
- Sapium sebiferum, commonly known as the Chinese tallow tree, is a plant species known for its diverse chemical constituents.
- Diterpenes, a class of organic compounds, are frequently found in plants and exhibit a wide range of biological activities.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize new ent-atisane diterpenes from the branches of Sapium sebiferum.
- To elucidate the chemical structures of the isolated compounds using spectroscopic methods.
Main Methods:
- Extraction of compounds from Sapium sebiferum branches.
- Isolation and purification of diterpenes using chromatographic techniques.
- Structure elucidation through comprehensive spectroscopic analyses (e.g., NMR, MS).
Main Results:
- Two new ent-atisane diterpenes, designated sebiferumnins K and L, were successfully isolated.
- Four known ent-atisane diterpenes were also identified, including ent-3-oxoatis-16α, 17-acetonide, ent-16α, 17-dihydroxyatisan-3-one, ent-atisane-3β, 16α, 17-triol, and ent-3α-hydroxyatis-16α, 17-acetonide.
- The structures of the new compounds were confirmed via detailed spectroscopic data analysis.
Conclusions:
- The study successfully identified and characterized novel diterpenoid compounds from Sapium sebiferum.
- The findings contribute to the growing knowledge of the phytochemistry of Sapium sebiferum and the ent-atisane diterpene class.

Stability of Conjugated Dienes
A comparison of the enthalpies of hydrogenation of dienes reveals that conjugated dienes release less heat on hydrogenation, rendering them more stable than their nonconjugated analogs.

Structure of Conjugated Dienes
Conjugated dienes are compounds characterized by the presence of alternating double and single bonds. In a conjugated system like 1,3-butadiene, the unhybridized 2p orbital on each carbon overlaps continuously, allowing the π electrons to be delocalized across the entire molecule. In contrast, this type of overlap does not occur in cumulated and isolated dienes, such as 2,3-pentadiene and 1,4-pentadiene, respectively. Instead, the π electrons remain localized between the double...
