    Summary

    An 11-week abdominal training program did not improve G tolerance or maximal intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) in fighter pilots. However, leg muscle endurance increased, and perceived exertion decreased following the training regimen.

    Background:

    • Pilots flying high-performance aircraft require enhanced G tolerance.
    • Straining maneuvers to increase G tolerance involve abdominal muscles, leading to high intra-abdominal pressures (IAP).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of an 11-week abdominal muscle training program on maximal IAP, G tolerance, and muscle strength/endurance in fighter pilots.

    Main Methods:

    • Ten fighter pilots underwent an 11-week abdominal training program.
    • G tolerance was assessed using simulated aerial combat maneuvers (ACM) in a human centrifuge.
    • Maximal IAP, muscle strength (maximal peak torque of knee extensors), and muscle endurance were measured.

    • While leg muscle endurance improved, this did not translate to increased G tolerance in this cohort.
