NMR Spectrometers: Resolution and Error Correction01:14

NMR Spectrometers: Resolution and Error Correction

When magnetic nuclei in a sample achieve resonance and undergo relaxation, the signal detected in NMR is an approximately exponential free induction decay. Fourier transform of an exponential decay yields a Lorentzian peak in the frequency domain. Lorentzian peaks in an NMR spectrum are defined by their amplitude, full width at half maximum, and position, where the peak width is governed by the spin-spin relaxation time alone. In real experiments, however, the applied magnetic field is rendered...

Area of Science:

  • Neuroimaging
  • Medical Physics
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Arterial spin labeling (ASL) offers absolute perfusion quantification.
  • Standardized ASL calibration procedures are lacking, impacting accuracy.
  • Post-processing calibration significantly influences ASL perfusion results.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of various post-processing calibration options on ASL perfusion quantification and reproducibility.
  • To compare different ASL calibration methods and post-processing choices.
  • To assess the influence of calibration on pulsed ASL and pseudo-continuous ASL sequences.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic comparison of main ASL calibration methods.
  • Evaluation of various post-processing calibration options.
  • Analysis of two datasets from common ASL sequences (pASL, pcASL).

Main Results:

  • Discrepancies in perfusion quantification varied with post-processing calibration options.
  • Voxelwise and white matter reference tissue methods showed less sensitivity to post-processing than CSF methods.
  • White matter reference tissue calibration yielded poorer reproducibility and may be unsuitable for white matter pathology.

Conclusions:

  • Inconsistent post-processing calibration can cause significant errors in ASL perfusion quantification.
  • A detailed description of the calibration procedure is essential for ASL studies.
  • The voxelwise calibration method is recommended for its simplicity and intrinsic correction of coil sensitivity profiles.
