Self-Help Support Groups01:28

Self-Help Support Groups

278
Self-help support groups are voluntary, community-based organizations that provide a platform for individuals with shared concerns to exchange support, insights, and practical strategies for coping with life challenges. Typically led by group members or paraprofessionals, these groups form a cornerstone of mental health care, especially in reaching populations that are underserved by traditional healthcare systems.

Self-Discrepancy and Its Effects

253
Self-discrepancy theory explains how people compare their actual self to their ideal and ought selves and how mismatches between these self-guides can lead to emotional distress. Developed by E. Tory Higgins, the theory distinguishes among three components of self-concept: the actual self, the ideal self, and the ought self. These refer respectively to how individuals perceive themselves, how they aspire to be, and how they believe they are obligated to be. Emotional well-being, self-esteem,...

Coping Strategies: Problem Focused

368
Coping strategies are methods people use to manage, tolerate, or reduce the effects of stressors. These strategies involve both behavioral and psychological actions to handle stressful situations. One common approach is problem-focused coping, which aims to change or eliminate the source of stress rather than merely addressing its consequences. This method involves taking direct action to resolve the issue causing stress.
For example, consider a student who struggles to understand their...

Self-Discrepancy Theory

One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

43.4K
People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about...

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Digital Health
  • Mental Health Interventions

Background:

  • Adjustment Disorder (AjD) is highly prevalent yet under-researched.
  • Effective, scalable treatments for AjD are needed.
  • Bibliotherapy offers a foundation for AjD interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a self-guided online intervention (ZIEL) for adjustment problems.
  • To assess the impact of the ZIEL intervention on AjD symptom severity, depressive symptoms, and quality of life.
  • To determine user satisfaction and usability of the ZIEL intervention.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 98 participants experiencing a recent life event.
  • Participants were assigned to either care as usual (CAU) or CAU plus the online ZIEL intervention.
  • Primary outcome: AjD symptom severity (ADNM-20). Secondary outcomes: depressive symptoms (BDI), quality of life (SF-12), satisfaction, and usability.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in AjD symptom severity between the intervention and control groups post-treatment.
  • The intervention group demonstrated significantly reduced depressive symptoms (Cohen's d: 0.89).
  • The intervention group reported significantly improved quality of life (Cohen's d: -0.49) and high usability.

Conclusions:

  • The ZIEL online intervention shows promise in reducing depressive symptoms and enhancing quality of life for individuals with adjustment problems.
  • The ZIEL intervention offers a scalable, low-barrier approach to complement existing treatments for AjD.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the full potential of digital interventions for Adjustment Disorder.
