Intermediate uveitis in Egypt often lacks a specific cause. When identified, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, and multiple sclerosis are common underlying conditions requiring consideration.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Immunology
- Systemic Inflammatory Diseases
Background:
- Intermediate uveitis is a form of intraocular inflammation.
- Identifying the underlying cause is crucial for effective management.
- Data on intermediate uveitis in Egypt is limited.
Purpose of the Study:
- To detail the clinical characteristics and etiological profile of intermediate uveitis.
- To analyze patient data from six tertiary eye centers in Egypt.
- To identify common causes and outcomes of intermediate uveitis in this population.
Main Methods:
- Multicenter retrospective chart review.
- Inclusion of 781 patients diagnosed with intermediate uveitis.
- Data collected between January 2010 and January 2017.
Main Results:
- Over half (58.77%) of cases were idiopathic.
- Identified causes included sarcoidosis (16.26%), tuberculosis (14.85%), and multiple sclerosis (9.09%).
- TINU accounted for 1.02% of cases; 62% of eyes achieved BCVA > 20/40.
Conclusions:
- A significant proportion of Egyptian intermediate uveitis patients have identifiable systemic causes.
- Sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, and multiple sclerosis are key differential diagnoses.
- Prompt recognition of these associated diseases is vital to prevent morbidity.
