Levels of Communication I: Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, and Small Group

14.7K
Interpersonal communication focuses on the exchange of messages between two people.
We can participate in these relationships through verbal, nonverbal, and mediated communication. We engage in verbal communication when we use words during our interaction to convey specific meanings. On the other hand, nonverbal communication refers to various factors that can impact how we understand each other—for example, facial expressions.

Communication

9.2K
Sharing information, concepts, and emotions to foster mutual understanding is communication. The sender, recipient, and transaction must be considered in this manner. The sender is the person who shares the message, the recipient is the person who receives and understands the message, and the transaction is the method used to deliver the message and the variables that affect the communication's context and surroundings. The nurse-client connection is built on therapeutic communication.

Communication between two animals occurs when one animal transmits an information signal that causes a change in the animal that receives the information. Organisms communicate with one another in a host of different ways. Signals can be auditory, chemical, visual, tactile, or a combination of these. Communication is a critical behavioral adaptation that promotes survival, growth, and reproduction.

Several factors are considered while creating a patient's care plan. Motivation is a factor in improving communication, and patients often require encouragement to try different approaches involving significant change. It is essential to involve the patient and family in decisions about the plan of care to determine whether the suggested methods are acceptable. Consider meeting critical comfort and safety needs before introducing new communication methods and techniques. Allow adequate time...

Nurses' Legal Responsibilities II

1.2K
Establishing a secure, collaborative nurse-patient relationship is crucial for delivering high-quality care. This relationship, founded on trust, respect, and honesty, enhances the patient's comfort and willingness to share vital health information. For example, a nurse who listens actively and without judgment provides clear information about health conditions and treatment options and respects patient decisions, which builds a trusting relationship.
Communication between nurses and...

Therapeutic Communication

6.8K
Communication is a lifelong learning process. Through therapeutic communication, nurses can collect relevant assessment data, provide education and counseling, and interact during nursing interventions. Sending and receiving messages occur through verbal and nonverbal communication techniques and can happen separately or simultaneously.
Verbal communication depends on language or a prescribed way of using words so that people can share information effectively. The critical aspects of verbal...

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Education
  • Communication Skills
  • Higher Education

Background:

  • Interpersonal communication competence (ICC) is crucial for nursing practice.
  • Assessing ICC levels in nursing students informs curriculum development.
  • Understanding factors influencing ICC can enhance student training.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the level of interpersonal communication competence among nursing students.
  • To examine the correlation between ICC domains and sociodemographic/academic variables.

Main Methods:

  • A correlational study was conducted across six federal universities in Brazil.
  • Data from 1,079 nursing students were collected using questionnaires and the Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale.
  • Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed for data analysis.

Main Results:

  • The overall mean ICC score was 63.74 (± 7.6).
  • "Availability" and "environment control" showed the highest and lowest domain averages, respectively.
  • Significant differences in ICC were observed concerning age, marital status, research/extension group participation, and paid work.

Conclusions:

  • This research provides insights into the interpersonal communication competence of nursing students in Brazil.
  • Findings offer valuable information for improving nursing education programs.
  • Identifying influencing factors can guide targeted interventions to enhance student communication skills.
