Nondisjunction01:21

Nondisjunction

4.7K
Nondisjunction is the failure of homologous chromosomes or sister chromatids to separate correctly and move to the opposite poles of the cells. This produces daughter cells with abnormal chromosome numbers.  Nondisjunction is common during anaphase I or anaphase II of meiosis.  Mutations in synaptonemal complex proteins that attach homologous chromosomes increase the chances of nondisjunction in anaphase I of meiosis I. In contrast, mutations in topoisomerases and condensins that hold...

Nondisjunction01:29

Nondisjunction

81.6K
During meiosis, chromosomes occasionally separate improperly. This occurs due to failure of homologous chromosome separation during meiosis I or failed sister chromatid separation during meiosis II. In some species, notably plants, nondisjunction can result in an organism with an entire additional set of chromosomes, which is called polyploidy. In humans, nondisjunction can occur during male or female gametogenesis and the resulting gametes possess one too many or one too few chromosomes.

In Vitro Fertilization01:24

In Vitro Fertilization

824
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a form of assisted reproductive technology where an egg is fertilized with sperm in a controlled laboratory environment before transferring the resulting embryo into the uterus. This process is designed to help individuals and couples experiencing difficulties conceiving.
The IVF process begins with ovarian stimulation, during which reproductive endocrinologists prescribe hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs instead of the single...

Area of Science:

  • Twin studies
  • Developmental psychology
  • Genetics research

Background:

  • The Florida State Twin Registry has been active for nearly 20 years.
  • It significantly expanded over a decade through the Florida Learning Disability Research Center.
  • The registry comprises 2753 sets of twins and other multiples in Florida.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To outline the characteristics of the samples within the registry.
  • To detail the measures used in studies contributing to the registry.
  • To provide an overview of a valuable resource for twin and multiple research.

Main Methods:

  • Data compilation from various research studies.
  • Demographic analysis of the twin registry participants.
  • Description of data collection instruments and protocols.

Main Results:

  • The registry's current mean age is 17.96 years (SD = 2.05).
  • The sample exhibits diversity: 49% White, 19% African American, 24% Hispanic, and 8% mixed or other.
  • The registry is a substantial resource for longitudinal and genetic studies.

Conclusions:

  • The Florida State Twin Registry is a well-established and diverse resource.
  • It provides a strong foundation for various research endeavors, particularly in learning disabilities.
  • The registry's characteristics are suitable for a wide range of developmental and behavioral research.
