Endocrine Signaling01:45

Endocrine Signaling

67.5K
Endocrine cells produce hormones to communicate with remote target cells found in other organs. The hormone reaches these distant areas using the circulatory system. This exposes the whole organism to the hormone but only those cells expressing hormone receptors or target cells are affected. Thus, endocrine signaling induces slow responses from its target cells but these effects also last longer.

What is the Endocrine System?

419.6K
The endocrine system sends hormones—chemical signals—through the bloodstream to target cells—the cells the hormones selectively affect. These signals are produced in endocrine cells, secreted into the extracellular fluid, and then diffuse into the blood. Eventually, they diffuse out of the blood and bind to target cells which have specialized receptors to recognize the hormones.

Endoscopic Procedures V: ERCP

2.4K
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a diagnostic procedure that combines endoscopy and fluoroscopy to diagnose and treat conditions related to the bile ducts, pancreatic ducts, and gallbladder. This procedure is beneficial for identifying and addressing blockages, gallstones, strictures, and tumors within the biliary or pancreatic systems. ERCP is both diagnostic and therapeutic, offering the ability to visualize and treat identified problems in one session.

Endoscopic Studies I: Bronchoscopy and Thoracoscopy

476
Endoscopy is a non-surgical medical technique used to examine a person's internal organs and vessels. This lesson will focus on two types of endoscopic studies: bronchoscopy and thoracoscopy.
Bronchoscopy
Description
Bronchoscopy is a procedure that involves direct visualization of the larynx, trachea, and bronchi for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. A flexible fiber optic or rigid bronchoscope is used to carry out the procedure. The fiber-optic bronchoscope is more frequently used due...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

European endocrine surgery training varies by country. Recommended minimum annual operation volumes for training units and fellows are proposed for thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and neuroendocrine tumor surgeries.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrine Surgery
  • Surgical Education
  • European Board of Surgery Qualification

Background:

  • The Division of Endocrine Surgery (DES) in Europe sets operation numbers for board qualification.
  • National boards dictate surgical training delivery, leading to knowledge gaps in endocrine surgery training across Europe.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the current state of surgical resident and fellow training in endocrine surgery in Europe.
  • To compare national training requirements with DES recommendations.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was distributed to 28 national delegates of the DES.
  • Two questionnaires focused on training for surgical residents and fellows, respectively, emphasizing appropriate operation numbers.

Main Results:

  • National surgical boards' operation numbers generally align with delegate views, though country-specific differences exist.
  • Current European Board of Surgery Qualification (EBSQ) exam requirements are adequate for thyroid and parathyroid procedures but fall short for neck dissections, adrenal, and GEP-NET operations.

Conclusions:

  • Training units should perform at least 100 thyroid, 50 parathyroid, 15 adrenal, and/or 10 GEP-NET operations annually.
  • Fellows should perform a minimum of 50 thyroid, 10 lymph node dissections, 15 parathyroid, 5 adrenal, and 5 GEP-NET operations.
