Phytochemical analysis of Dianella ensifolia revealed ten compounds, including three novel natural products. This research expands our understanding of the plant
Area of Science:
- Natural Product Chemistry
- Phytochemistry
- Organic Chemistry
Background:
- Dianella ensifolia (L.) DC. is a plant species with potential medicinal properties.
- Previous phytochemical studies on Dianella species have identified various bioactive compounds.
Purpose of the Study:
- To conduct a detailed phytochemical investigation of the aerial parts of Dianella ensifolia.
- To isolate and characterize chemical constituents from Dianella ensifolia extracts.
Main Methods:
- Extraction and chromatographic separation techniques were employed.
- High-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) was used for structural determination.
- One-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopies were utilized for structural elucidation.
Main Results:
- Ten compounds were isolated and identified, including flavans, biflavans, biflavones, a tetralone, a naphthalene glycoside, an aromatic compound, and steroids.
- Three new compounds were discovered: 7-acetyl-4R,8-dihydroxy-6-methyl-1-tetralone, 2(S),2',4'-dihydroxy-7-methoxyflavan, and diaensi-biflavan.
- 2(S),7,4'-dimethoxy flavan was isolated as a natural product for the first time.
Conclusions:
- The phytochemical investigation successfully identified known and novel compounds from Dianella ensifolia.
- The discovery of new compounds contributes to the chemical diversity of natural products.
- This study provides a foundation for further research into the biological activities of these isolated compounds.

Diels–Alder Reaction: Characteristics of Dienes
Characteristics of the diene
Conformation
The simplest example of a diene is 1,3-butadiene, an acyclic conjugated π system. At room temperature, the molecule exists as a mixture of s-cis and s-trans conformers by virtue of rotation around the carbon–carbon single bond. Although the s-trans isomer is more stable,...
Structure and Nomenclature of Alcohols and Phenols
Alcohols are one of the most important functional groups in organic chemistry. The name of alcohol comes from the hydrocarbon from which it is derived. Alcohols are organic molecules containing the functional hydroxyl or –OH group directly bonded to carbon. Phenols have an OH group directly attached to a benzene ring. While alcohols are colorless, phenol is a white crystalline compound with a characteristic "hospital smell" odor.
As with other organic compounds, alcohols and...
Types of Step-Growth Polymers: Polyesters
Polyesters are commonly prepared from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol; the crude product is known as poly(ethylene terephthalate) or PET. However, polyesters are synthesized industrially by transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol at 150 °C. The two reactants and the polymer...

Characteristics of Dienophiles
Generally, the best dienophiles are alkenes containing electron-withdrawing substituents such as carbonyl, nitrile, and nitro groups. The feasibility of a Diels–Alder reaction depends...
