Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a phytocannabinoid that primarily interacts with the CB1 receptor, a type of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) predominantly in and around the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) and emetic center. Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between marijuana consumption and the prevalence, severity, and occurrence rate of tinnitus.
  • To clarify the complex relationship between cannabis use and auditory perception.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional analysis utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011-2012).
  • Statistical evaluation of 2705 adults (aged 20-69) with audiometric testing and questionnaires on hearing, drug use, and health history.
  • Controlled for covariables including age, gender, hearing loss, noise exposure, and other substance use.

Main Results:

  • Monthly or more frequent marijuana use was significantly associated with experiencing tinnitus (p < 0.001).
  • Marijuana users were 1.75 times more likely to report tinnitus, even after adjusting for confounding factors (p=0.043).
  • No significant association was found between the quantity/frequency of marijuana use and tinnitus severity or occurrence.

Conclusions:

  • Regular marijuana use is correlated with a higher prevalence of tinnitus.
  • The study did not find a dose-response relationship between marijuana use and tinnitus.
  • The complex link between marijuana and tinnitus may involve psychosocial factors.
