Endoscopic Studies I: Bronchoscopy and Thoracoscopy

476
Endoscopy is a non-surgical medical technique used to examine a person's internal organs and vessels. This lesson will focus on two types of endoscopic studies: bronchoscopy and thoracoscopy.
Bronchoscopy
Description
Bronchoscopy is a procedure that involves direct visualization of the larynx, trachea, and bronchi for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. A flexible fiber optic or rigid bronchoscope is used to carry out the procedure. The fiber-optic bronchoscope is more frequently used due...

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Tympanoplasty reconstructs the tympano-ossicular system.
  • Conventional microscopic tympanoplasty is a standard surgical approach.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare conventional postauricular microscopic tympanoplasty with permeatal endoscopic tympanoplasty.
  • To analyze intraoperative and postoperative outcomes of both techniques.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study on 50 patients undergoing type I tympanoplasty.
  • Patients were divided into two groups: 25 for microscopic and 25 for endoscopic tympanoplasty.

Main Results:

  • Success rates and hearing improvement were comparable between microscopic and endoscopic groups.
  • Endoscopic tympanoplasty demonstrated superior intraoperative ease, reduced operative time, and lower postoperative morbidity.
  • Disadvantages of the endoscopic technique include challenging instrumentation and a steep learning curve.

Conclusions:

  • Permeatal endoscopic tympanoplasty is a viable alternative to conventional microscopic tympanoplasty.
  • The endoscopic approach offers significant advantages in patient recovery and surgical efficiency.
