Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Prosthodontics
  • Biomaterials Engineering

Background:

  • Growing patient demand for improved aesthetics drives the use of flexible thermoplastic denture base materials.
  • Aesthetic-focused denture designs can present functional and maintenance challenges for prosthodontists.
  • Investigating material behavior is crucial for optimizing denture design and patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare vertical displacement in unilateral extension base denture models.
  • To evaluate flexible removable dentures against conventional metal clasp dentures.
  • To assess the impact of metal rests on flexible denture displacement.

Main Methods:

  • Simulated periodontal ligament and jaw mucosa using silicone impression material.
  • Prepared unilateral extension base flexible removable denture models for mandibular defects.
  • Measured vertical displacement under a 50 N load on first and second molars for 6 denture types (4 flexible, 2 metal clasp).

Main Results:

  • Flexible removable dentures exhibited greater vertical displacement than metal clasp dentures.
  • The addition of a metal rest significantly decreased vertical displacement in flexible dentures.
  • Esteshot with a metal rest demonstrated the least displacement among flexible options.

Conclusions:

  • Rests are critical for the stability of unilateral extension base flexible removable dentures.
  • Incorporating metal rests with flexible dentures can reduce mucosal load, similar to conventional partial dentures.
  • Metal rests enhance the functional performance of flexible removable dentures.
