Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, and its incidence continues to rise.

Tumor Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is a treatment that boosts or manipulates the immune system to fight diseases, including cancer. For instance, by stimulating an immune response through vaccinations against viruses that cause cancers, like hepatitis B virus and human papillomavirus, these diseases can be prevented. Nonetheless, some cancer cells can avoid the immune system due to their rapid mutation and division. The immune response to many cancers involves three phases: elimination, equilibrium, and escape.

Background:

Multidisciplinary tumor boards (MTBs) are recognized as valuable platforms for coordinating complex cancer patient care.
Limited literature exists on the specific application and benefits of MTBs in cutaneous oncology.

Observation:

The University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC) established cutaneous oncology MTBs to address challenging cases.
The study details the formation, participation, case discussion, and follow-up processes of these MTBs.
A case log from August 2018 to August 2019 illustrates the practical application of the cutaneous oncology MTBs.

Findings:

UVMMC's MTBs fostered a collaborative environment among diverse medical specialists.
Optimal treatment plans were jointly formulated for complex dermatologic oncology cases.
The MTBs proved particularly beneficial for cases lacking established treatment guidelines.

Implications:

Implementing MTBs in cutaneous oncology can optimize patient care and outcomes.
These boards serve as crucial educational platforms for healthcare providers across specialties.
The collaborative model facilitates comprehensive management of challenging skin cancer cases.
