Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms-SNPs

17.8K
A single nucleotide polymorphism or SNP is a single nucleotide variation at a specific genomic position in a large population. It is the most prevalent type of sequence variation found in the human genome. Point mutations that occur in more than 1% of the population qualify as SNPs. These are present once every 1000 nucleotides on an average in the human genome. Replacement of a purine with another purine (A/G) or a pyrimidine with another pyrimidine (C/T) is known as a transition. In contrast,...

Zygotic Development And Stem Cell Formation

6.3K
The development of all multicellular organisms starts with the fusion of haploid cells called sperm and egg to form a diploid zygote. A zygote is a totipotent cell that can develop into a complete organism. The zygote undergoes cell division or cleavage to form an 8-cell mass. Until this stage, the cells are spherical, loosely attached, and remain totipotent. Totipotent cells are capable of developing both the embryonic and the extraembryonic tissues. However, as they continue to divide, they...

Summary

Mandatory mumps vaccination in Poland has significantly reduced cases. High vaccination coverage is expected to further decrease mumps incidence in children and the general population.

Area of Science:

  • Epidemiology
  • Immunology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Mumps vaccination using the MMR vaccine became mandatory in Poland in 2003, following a period where it was only recommended.
  • Despite a decade-long decline in mumps incidence due to vaccination efforts, the disease remains prevalent among children.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the epidemiological status of mumps in Poland during 2017.
  • To assess mumps vaccination coverage within the Polish population.
  • To compare the 2017 data with previous years' trends.

Main Methods:

  • Descriptive analysis of mumps surveillance data.
  • Utilized data from mandatory surveillance systems and annual bulletins on infectious diseases and vaccinations in Poland for 2017.

Main Results:

  • Poland registered 1,670 mumps cases in 2017, with an incidence rate of 4.3 per 100,000 population, a decrease from 2016.
  • The highest incidence was observed in Małopolskie voivodeship (5.5 per 100,000) and among 6-year-old children (32.5 per 100,000).
  • Vaccination coverage for 3-year-olds was 94.0% in 2017, a slight decrease from the previous year.

Conclusions:

  • Consistent implementation of the National Immunisation Programme for mumps has led to a substantial reduction in reported cases.
  • Continued high vaccination coverage is anticipated to result in a further decrease in mumps cases.
