1School of Nursing, Thompson Rivers University, Canada.
Healthcare educators often create unique simulated patient scenarios. This review found inconsistent methods for ensuring the validity and reliability of these crucial educational tools, hindering replication.
Area of Science:
- Healthcare Education
- Medical Simulation
Background:
- Healthcare educators and researchers develop custom simulated patient (SP) scenarios.
- Standardized processes for SP scenario validity and reliability are needed for replication and knowledge transfer.
Purpose of the Study:
- To conduct a methodological review of the CINAHL database.
- To determine how simulated patient scenarios are developed for validity and reliability.
Main Methods:
- A systematic review of 375 CINAHL abstracts was performed.
- 17 qualifying records were selected based on inclusion/exclusion criteria.
- Data extracted included discipline, simulation type, and validity/reliability processes.
Main Results:
- Included studies spanned nursing, medicine, and paramedicine, using various simulation fidelities.
- Scenario validation methods included expert consultation, personal experience, and participant feedback, with face, content, and construct validity examined.
- Reliability determination was often unaddressed; consistency measures included piloting and performance observation.
Conclusions:
- Inconsistent and often non-evidence-based processes are used to develop valid and reliable simulated patient scenarios.
- Future SP scenario development requires systematic approaches to validity and reliability to ensure replicability across contexts.
