Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the content, authorship, and study design of rheumatological publications from Malaysia.
  • To analyze trends in publication numbers and citations within Malaysian rheumatology research.

Main Methods:

  • Searched Malaysian Medical Repository (MyMedR) and Scopus for publications from 1950 to June 2019.
  • Analyzed publication types, subject areas, and citation trends.

Main Results:

  • A 27-fold increase in publications was observed from pre-1980 to 2010-2019.
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoporosis were the most published topics.
  • Median citations per paper were low (5), with minimal increase over time.

Conclusions:

  • Malaysian rheumatology publications show a positive growth trend, especially recently.
  • There is a need to enhance the quality and impact factor of publications.
  • Further improvements in research quality are recommended for Malaysian rheumatology.
