Abstract:
The review summarises the available knowledge of psychiatric disorders in Greenland. The dominant problem is the increase in suicide rates especially among young men. The maximum was reached in the 1990s and remains among the world's highest. The incidence of schizophrenia is twice as high as in Denmark, and the course is significantly worse. There are also remarkable differences in the incidence of bipolar disorder and depression between Denmark and Greenland, and the reason is poorly understood. There is a great need for research in effective psychiatric preventive strategies.
