Summary
Meloxicam and celecoxib did not alter Parrot bornavirus syndrome in cockatiels. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may cause gastrointestinal toxicity in birds infected with Parrot bornavirus-2 (PaBV-2).

Background:
- Parrot bornavirus (PaBV) causes Parrot bornavirus syndrome (PBS), including proventricular dilatation disease (PDD).
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are being investigated for potential therapeutic effects in PBS.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the effects of celecoxib and meloxicam on cockatiels experimentally infected with Parrot bornavirus-2 (PaBV-2).
- To determine if NSAID treatment alters clinical presentation, viral shedding, or pathology associated with PaBV-2 infection.
Main Methods:
- Twenty-seven cockatiels were inoculated with PaBV-2 and randomized into three groups: placebo, meloxicam (1.0 mg/kg), or celecoxib (10.0 mg/kg).
- Oral treatments were administered daily starting 23 days post-inoculation.
- Clinical signs, necropsy, histopathology, and viral detection (RT-PCR, immunohistochemistry) were assessed.
