Transperitoneal percutaneous retroperitoneal lymph node aspiration biopsy.

    Summary

    Percutaneous aspiration biopsy is an effective method for diagnosing retroperitoneal masses and lymph nodes. This minimally invasive technique, using a 23-gauge needle under fluoroscopic guidance, successfully identified various cancers with minimal complications.

    Background:

    • Retroperitoneal masses and lymph nodes often require biopsy for diagnosis.

    Observation:

    • A 23-gauge needle was used for percutaneous aspiration biopsy under fluoroscopic guidance.
    • The procedure targeted opacified retroperitoneal lymph nodes and various masses (retroperitoneal, intraperitoneal, paraspinal).

    Findings:

    • Successful biopsies were achieved in 14 out of 17 patients.
    • Metastatic carcinoma, sarcoma, and melanoma were readily identified.
    • Diagnosing lymphoma, particularly its subtype, proved more challenging.
