Insights
Yersinia enterocolitica septicaemia can occur in children with chronic anemia. Iron overload and deferoxamine chelation significantly increase the risk of this serious infection.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Infectious Diseases
- Hematology
- Microbiology
Background:
- Chronic anemia in children presents complex health challenges.
- Iron overload is a known complication in certain anemias.
- Deferoxamine chelation therapy is used to manage iron overload.
Observation:
- A pediatric case of Yersinia enterocolitica septicaemia was identified.
- The patient had a history of chronic anemia.
Findings:
- The child developed Yersinia enterocolitica septicaemia.
- Iron overload was present in the patient.
- Deferoxamine chelation therapy was administered.
Implications:
- Iron overload and deferoxamine chelation are identified as key risk factors for Yersinia infection in anemic children.
- This case highlights the importance of monitoring for infections in immunocompromised patients with specific therapeutic interventions.
- Clinicians should consider the heightened risk of bacterial septicaemia in anemic patients undergoing iron chelation therapy.
Abstract:
We report one case of Yersinia enterocolitica septicaemia in a child with chronic anemia. Iron overload and chelation with deferoxamine are the main factors which enhance the risk of such an infection.
