This study found no link between angle kappa distance and visual outcomes after trifocal IOL implantation. Both Acrysof IQ PanOptix and AT LISA tri IOLs provided excellent visual acuity at all distances.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Optics
- Biomedical Engineering
Background:
- Presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (IOLs) aim to restore clear vision at multiple distances.
- Angle kappa, the angle between the visual and pupillary axes, and higher-order aberrations (HOAs) can influence visual quality after IOL implantation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between angle kappa distance and higher-order aberrations (HOAs) with postoperative visual acuity.
- To compare visual performance between AT LISA tri 839MP and Acrysof IQ PanOptix trifocal IOLs.
Main Methods:
- A prospective, randomized, comparative study included 43 eyes undergoing trifocal IOL implantation (AT LISA tri 839MP or Acrysof IQ PanOptix).
- Angle kappa distance and HOAs were measured using the OPD-Scan III analyzer.
- Postoperative visual acuity (uncorrected distance, intermediate, and near) was assessed at six months.
Main Results:
- Both trifocal IOL groups demonstrated excellent uncorrected visual acuity at distance, intermediate, and near.
- No significant association was found between angle kappa distance and postoperative visual acuity for either IOL.
- Internal aberrations showed a significant inverse correlation with the Strehl ratio for both IOL types.
Conclusions:
- Angle kappa distance does not appear to be a significant predictor of visual acuity outcomes after implantation of these two trifocal IOLs.
- Both AT LISA tri 839MP and Acrysof IQ PanOptix IOLs offer effective visual rehabilitation for presbyopia.
- Higher-order aberrations significantly impact visual quality, as indicated by their correlation with the Strehl ratio.
