Personode is a new MATLAB toolbox that semi-automatically classifies resting state networks (RSNs) and defines subject-specific regions-of-interest (ROIs). This improves the accuracy of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) analyses for both task-related activation and functional connectivity.
Area of Science:
- Neuroimaging
- Computational Neuroscience
Background:
- Resting state networks (RSNs) are reproducible but show inter-individual differences.
- Defining subject-specific regions-of-interest (ROIs) can enhance functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) accuracy.
- Current methods for classifying RSNs and defining subject-specific ROIs are time-consuming and rely on visual inspection.
Purpose of the Study:
- To introduce Personode, a user-friendly, open-source MATLAB toolbox.
- To enable semi-automatic classification of RSNs and definition of subject- and group-specific ROIs.
- To validate Personode's utility in improving fMRI analyses.
Main Methods:
- Developed Personode, a MATLAB-based toolbox for RSN classification and ROI definition.
- Applied Personode to both task-related activation and resting-state fMRI data.
- Compared Personode-derived ROIs with traditional methods for defining ROIs.
Main Results:
- Personode semi-automatically classifies RSNs and defines subject-specific ROIs.
- Subject-specific ROIs from Personode yielded higher activity contrasts in task-related analyses.
- Personode-defined ROIs improved ROI-to-ROI functional connectivity analyses.
Conclusions:
- Personode offers a valuable tool for RSN classification and ROI definition.
- The toolbox enhances the accuracy of task-related activation and functional connectivity analyses.
- Personode facilitates more precise and individualized fMRI studies.
