Hemodialysis II: Procedure and Complications

499
DialyzersA hemodialysis (HD) dialyzer is a plastic cartridge containing thousands of parallel hollow fibers, which serve as semipermeable membranes. These fibers are typically made from cellulose-based or other synthetic materials. During HD, blood is pumped into the top of the cartridge and distributed among these fibers. Simultaneously, dialysis fluid, known as dialysate, is introduced into the bottom of the cartridge, bathing the outside of the fibers. Across the semipermeable membrane,...

Urologic Endoscopic Procedure: Cystoscopic Examination

1.8K
Meaning of Cystoscopic Examination:Cystoscopy is an essential diagnostic tool in urology that is used to assess the structure and function of the genitourinary system. It provides a direct view of the urethra, bladder, and, in some cases, the ureteral openings. This procedure helps detect structural abnormalities, infections, cancers, and blockages in the urinary tract. There are two types of cystoscopy:Flexible cystoscopy is commonly performed in outpatient settings due to its less invasive...

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

Background:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) affects a large number of aging men.
  • Traditional surgical options for BPH can have significant side effects and complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the initial outcomes of Holmium laser prostate enucleation (HoLEP) in a clinical setting.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of HoLEP for BPH treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 24 patients undergoing HoLEP surgery.
  • Evaluation of demographic data, operative parameters, and post-operative outcomes.
  • Comparison of International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and uroflowmetry before and after surgery.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements observed in IPSS and uroflowmetry (Qmean).
  • Hemoglobin levels showed a statistically significant difference post-surgery.
  • Complication rates were found to be consistent with existing literature.

Conclusions:

  • HoLEP is a highly reliable surgical option for BPH.
  • HoLEP demonstrates comparable functional outcomes to gold standard procedures.
  • HoLEP offers advantages including reduced complications, shorter catheterization/hospitalization, and cost-effectiveness.
