Summary

Umbilicoplasty and umbiliconeoplasty reconstruct the umbilicus for aesthetic or functional reasons. Optimal umbilical reconstruction is reliable, reproducible, aesthetically appropriate, and has low morbidity.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Reconstructive Surgery

Background:

  • The umbilicus is a natural scar with significant aesthetic implications.
  • Umbilical loss or deformity can result from various surgical procedures or congenital conditions.
  • Abnormalities can cause embarrassment and impact body image.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To discuss techniques for umbilical reconstruction, including umbilicoplasty and umbiliconeoplasty.
  • To define the characteristics of optimal umbilical reconstruction.
  • To highlight the importance of aesthetic and functional outcomes in umbilical repair.

Main Methods:

  • Review of surgical techniques for umbilical reconstruction.
  • Discussion of indications for umbilicoplasty (transposition) and umbiliconeoplasty (de novo creation).
  • Consideration of factors influencing the choice of technique and approach (e.g., single-stage vs. delayed primary).

Main Results:

  • Umbilicoplasty involves transposing the existing umbilicus.
  • Umbiliconeoplasty creates a new umbilicus for congenital or acquired absence.
  • The goal is a reliable, reproducible, aesthetically pleasing result with minimal complications.

Conclusions:

  • Umbilical reconstruction addresses deformities from hernia repairs, abdominoplasty, and other surgeries.
  • Both umbilicoplasty and umbiliconeoplasty aim to restore a natural appearance.
  • Achieving optimal outcomes requires careful surgical planning and execution.
