Summary

Using rabbit models, medial meniscus grafts replacing anterior or posterior cruciate ligaments did not form normal tissue. The grafts showed poor strength, indicating this method is unsuitable for cruciate ligament repair.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the histological and biomechanical outcomes of using the medial meniscus as an autograft for anterior or posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.
  • To determine the potential of meniscus tissue to differentiate into functional ligamentous tissue in vivo.

Main Methods:

  • Medial meniscus grafts were used to replace the anterior or posterior cruciate ligament in 30 rabbits.
  • Histological sections of the intra-articular and bone-graft insertion sites were analyzed over time.

    • Further research into graft modification or alternative materials is needed for effective cruciate ligament reconstruction.
