The Thyroid Gland01:23

The Thyroid Gland

6.4K
The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck and covers the anterior surface of the trachea. The gland has two lateral lobes connected by a thin tissue mass called the isthmus. Internally, each lobe comprises many small spherical structures known as thyroid follicles, surrounded by a network of blood vessels.
The follicles have a central cavity lined by simple cuboidal to squamous epithelial cells called follicular cells. These cells produce the glycoprotein...

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Embryology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Ectopic thyroid tissue is rare, typically found along the thyroglossal duct.
  • Locations include the base of the tongue, larynx, mediastinum, and heart.
  • Previous reports of ectopic thyroid tissue in the breast are exceptionally scarce.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a unique case of multifocal ectopic thyroid tissue in the breast.
  • To discuss the potential embryological origins of this rare presentation.
  • To contribute to the limited literature on ectopic thyroid tissue in mammary glands.

Main Methods:

  • Case report and literature review.
  • Histopathological examination of the breast tissue.
  • Analysis of embryological development in relation to ectopic tissue implantation.

Main Results:

  • Identification of multifocal ectopic thyroid tissue within the breast parenchyma.
  • The case presented with distinct features suggesting abnormal embryological development.
  • Comparison with the single previously reported case in English literature.

Conclusions:

  • Multifocal ectopic thyroid tissue in the breast is an exceedingly rare finding.
  • Abnormal embryological development and implantation may explain such occurrences.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the pathogenesis of ectopic thyroid tissue in diverse locations.
