A feline renal myxosarcoma was surgically removed in a 12-year-old cat presenting with abdominal mass and bleeding. The cat remained disease-free 14 months post-nephrectomy, indicating successful surgical management of this rare kidney tumor.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Medicine
- Surgical Oncology
- Canine and Feline Pathology
Background:
- A 12-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat presented with lethargy, anorexia, and a pendulous abdomen.
- Physical examination revealed a palpable cranial abdominal mass, prompting further diagnostic imaging.
Observation:
- Abdominal ultrasound and thoracic radiographs identified a kidney-associated mass with moderate hemoperitoneum.
- Exploratory laparotomy confirmed abdominal hemorrhage originating from a right renal mass adhered to the caudal vena cava.
Findings:
- Histopathology diagnosed the renal mass as a perirenal/renal myxosarcoma.
- A right nephrectomy was performed to remove the tumor and control hemorrhage.
Implications:
- The patient remained disease-free for 14 months post-surgery, suggesting a positive prognosis after nephrectomy for renal myxosarcoma.
- This case highlights the importance of diagnostic imaging and surgical intervention for feline renal masses.
