Myxosarcoma Associated with the Kidney in a Cat: Case Report

Background:

• A 12-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat presented with lethargy, anorexia, and a pendulous abdomen.
• Physical examination revealed a palpable cranial abdominal mass, prompting further diagnostic imaging.

Observation:

• Abdominal ultrasound and thoracic radiographs identified a kidney-associated mass with moderate hemoperitoneum.
• Exploratory laparotomy confirmed abdominal hemorrhage originating from a right renal mass adhered to the caudal vena cava.

Findings:

• Histopathology diagnosed the renal mass as a perirenal/renal myxosarcoma.
• A right nephrectomy was performed to remove the tumor and control hemorrhage.

Implications:

• The patient remained disease-free for 14 months post-surgery, suggesting a positive prognosis after nephrectomy for renal myxosarcoma.
• This case highlights the importance of diagnostic imaging and surgical intervention for feline renal masses.
