This review found that higher self-compassion is linked to fewer posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind this protective effect of self-compassion.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Mental Health
- Trauma Studies
Background:
- Self-compassion is a recognized factor in mental health.
- Conceptual links exist between self-compassion and trauma, but empirical evidence requires synthesis.
- No comprehensive review has systematically examined the association between trauma/PTSD and self-compassion.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review and summarize empirical research on the relationship between trauma and/or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and self-compassion.
Main Methods:
- Searches conducted across multiple major scientific databases (PsycINFO, PubMed, Web of Science, etc.).
- Inclusion criteria focused on studies directly analyzing the relationship between trauma/PTSD and self-compassion.
- Identified 35 studies meeting the inclusion criteria for the review.
Main Results:
- Consistent evidence indicates that increased self-compassion is associated with reduced PTSD symptomatology.
- Some evidence suggests that reduced fear of self-compassion correlates with lower PTSD symptoms.
- Tentative evidence supports the potential of self-compassion-based interventions in reducing PTSD symptoms.
Conclusions:
- Increased self-compassion appears to be protective against PTSD symptoms, though mechanisms remain unclear.
- Further prospective and longitudinal studies are recommended to elucidate the protective effects.
- The heterogeneity in defining and measuring trauma exposure necessitates further research clarification.
