Summary

Event measures of self-regulated learning (SRL), like microanalysis, better predict medical student performance than questionnaires. A combined approach using both event and aptitude measures is recommended for a comprehensive understanding of SRL.

  • Validity of aptitude measures for capturing SRL processes is a significant concern.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine correlations between SRL microanalysis, SRL trace, and the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ).
  • To assess the association of these SRL measures with biomedical science performance in medical students.

Main Methods:

  • SRL microanalysis interviews and trace analysis of learning materials were conducted with 76 first-year medical students.
  • Students completed the MSLQ, a widely used aptitude measure, prior to the course.
  • Correlation and regression analyses were used to compare SRL measures and their association with task and course performance.

Main Results:

  • Microanalytic metacognitive monitoring and causal attributions correlated significantly with SRL trace strategy use.
  • MSLQ self-efficacy showed a significant correlation with microanalytic self-efficacy.
  • Event measures (microanalysis) demonstrated stronger associations with task and course performance than the MSLQ aptitude measure.

Conclusions:

  • SRL microanalysis appears more strongly associated with medical student performance than the MSLQ questionnaire.
  • SRL microanalysis is recommended for assessing SRL in biomedical science learning.
  • A multidimensional approach combining event and aptitude measures is advised for a complete understanding of medical students' SRL.
