This study presents a novel virtual antenna array (VAA) for automotive radar, enabling simultaneous medium and long-range detection. This innovative antenna array offers improved efficiency and gain with a simplified design for 24 GHz applications.
Area of Science:
- Electrical Engineering
- Electromagnetics
- Antenna Theory
Background:
- Automotive radar systems require advanced antenna arrays for enhanced detection capabilities.
- Existing planar antenna arrays (PAA) face challenges including large size, low isolation, and limited coverage.
- The need for efficient and high-gain antenna solutions for dual-range radar applications is critical.
Purpose of the Study:
- To introduce a novel virtual antenna array (VAA) synthesis for radar systems.
- To enable simultaneous support for medium-range radar (MRR) and long-range radar (LRR) with distinct beam widths.
- To address limitations of traditional antenna arrays in automotive radar applications.
Main Methods:
- Application of the virtual antenna array (VAA) concept to scanning and fixed radiation pattern arrays.
- Utilizing the method of moments/genetic algorithm (MoM/GA) for antenna array synthesis.
- Analytical and experimental verification of the proposed VAA concept.
Main Results:
- Designed two orthogonal 16-element VAAs operating from 23.55 to 24.7 GHz.
- Achieved a flat-shoulder shape (FSS) radiation pattern suitable for MRR/LRR.
- Demonstrated good agreement between simulated and experimentally measured results.
- The VAA offers minimum elements, simple feeding, high efficiency, and gain, albeit with a larger aperture size.
Conclusions:
- The proposed virtual antenna array (VAA) effectively addresses key challenges in automotive radar antenna design.
- The VAA provides a viable solution for achieving dual-range detection with improved performance characteristics.
- This novel antenna array is well-suited for 24 GHz automotive radar applications, enhancing resolution and coverage range.
