Background:

  • Working memory updating (WMU) is vital for adapting to changing environments and is a key executive function.
  • Previous research indicates older adults are more susceptible to cognitive interference, but WMU aging is understudied in middle-aged populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of age on working memory updating (WMU) across adulthood.
  • To determine if reduced interference control contributes to age-related WMU decline.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 112 healthy adults across four age groups: young adults (18-25), adults (26-44), middle-aged adults (45-59), and old adults (60-78).
  • Participants completed a 1-back task, and inverse efficiency scores were calculated to assess WMU performance across different sequential patterns.

Main Results:

  • Younger and adult groups demonstrated significantly better WMU performance (shorter inverse efficiency scores) than the old group in both Repeat-Alternate and Alternate-Alternate patterns.
  • Younger and adult groups also outperformed the middle-age group in the Alternate-Alternate pattern, suggesting a more pronounced effect with increased task difficulty.

Conclusions:

  • Age-related degradation of WMU may initiate in middle age, specifically impacting reactive interference control.
  • While differences between young and old adults were apparent, the distinction between young and middle-aged adults emerged with increased task difficulty, highlighting selective cognitive aging.
