Summary

Oral anticoagulation, particularly warfarin, is less commonly associated with alopecia than previously reported. Hair loss may persist during treatment, and regrowth after discontinuation can be lengthy.

Background:

  • Previous reports suggested a high incidence (42-78%) of alopecia linked to oral anticoagulation.
  • The timing of alopecia onset relative to warfarin administration was also questioned.

Observation:

  • A survey of experienced dermatologists indicated that the oral anticoagulation-alopecia association is rare.
  • Alopecia was observed to persist despite continued warfarin use.

Findings:

  • The actual incidence of warfarin-induced alopecia appears significantly lower than previously estimated.
  • Hair regrowth after warfarin cessation may be prolonged, posing challenges for patients requiring ongoing anticoagulation.

Implications:

  • Clinical assessment of hair loss in patients on oral anticoagulants should consider alternative causes.
  • Further research is needed on the effects of warfarin alternatives and the potential for alopecia recurrence upon rechallenge.
