A new headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC/MS) method can rapidly identify gamma-irradiated soybeans. The marker 1,7-hexadecadiene is detected in irradiated samples, offering a sensitive and solvent-free detection technique.
Area of Science:
- Food Science
- Analytical Chemistry
- Radiation Chemistry
Background:
- Gamma irradiation is used for soybean sterilization and preservation.
- Accurate identification of irradiated soybeans is crucial for regulatory compliance and consumer safety.
- Conventional methods for detecting irradiation may be time-consuming or require solvents.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate a rapid analytical method for identifying gamma-irradiated soybeans.
- To establish 1,7-hexadecadiene as a reliable marker for gamma irradiation in soybeans.
- To optimize headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) conditions for marker detection.
Main Methods:
- Utilized headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC/MS).
- Employed partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLSDA) to identify marker compounds.
- Optimized extraction parameters using response surface methodology (RSM).
Main Results:
- 1,7-Hexadecadiene was identified as a specific marker for gamma-irradiated soybeans (≥ 0.1 kGy).
- Optimal HS-SPME conditions were determined: carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane fiber, 98 °C extraction temperature, and 55 min extraction time.
- The marker's presence was confirmed and distinguished from other treatments (heat, steam, microwave, sonication, UV).
Conclusions:
- HS-SPME-GC/MS provides a rapid, sensitive, and solvent-free method for detecting gamma-irradiated soybeans.
- 1,7-Hexadecadiene is a robust marker for verifying soybean irradiation.
- This method offers significant advantages over conventional detection techniques.
