Background:

  • Pustulosis palmoplantaris (PPP) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
  • The association between PPP and autoimmune diseases, particularly thyroid disorders, warrants investigation.

Observation:

  • Fifty patients with PPP were assessed for thyroid disease.
  • A significant proportion of PPP patients exhibited thyroid abnormalities, including elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone and thyroid microsomal antibodies.
  • Smoking was highly prevalent in PPP patients compared to controls.

Findings:

  • The prevalence of thyroid disease was significantly higher in women with PPP than in the general female population.
  • Autoimmune thyroid disease was identified in a notable percentage of PPP patients.
