Summary

This study reports a rare case of primary pericardial hemangiosarcoma in a horse. The tumor metastasized to the pleura and adrenal gland, a previously undescribed origin site in equine oncology.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Pathology
  • Equine Oncology
  • Comparative Pathology

Background:

  • Hemangiosarcomas are malignant vascular tumors known to occur in horses.
  • The pericardium is an uncommon site for primary tumor development in equine species.
  • Metastatic patterns of equine tumors are not fully elucidated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To document a novel case of primary pericardial hemangiosarcoma in a horse.
  • To describe the metastatic spread of this specific tumor.
  • To contribute to the understanding of rare equine neoplasms.

Main Methods:

  • Case presentation of a 22-year-old Clydesdale x Percheron gelding.
  • Necropsy and histopathological examination of the primary tumor and metastatic sites.
  • Review of existing literature on equine hemangiosarcomas.

Main Results:

  • A primary hemangiosarcoma was identified originating within the pericardium.
  • Metastases were confirmed in the parietal pleura and left adrenal gland.
  • This represents the first reported instance of a primary pericardial hemangiosarcoma in equine literature.

Conclusions:

  • Primary pericardial hemangiosarcoma is a rare but possible diagnosis in horses.
  • The findings expand the known anatomical locations for primary hemangiosarcoma origin in equine patients.
  • Further investigation into equine vascular tumor behavior and metastasis is warranted.
