Non-nuclear Inheritance01:29

Non-nuclear Inheritance

22.9K
Most DNA resides in the nucleus of a cell. However, some organelles in the cell cytoplasm—such as chloroplasts and mitochondria—also have their own DNA. These organelles replicate their DNA independently of the nuclear DNA of the cell in which they reside. Non-nuclear inheritance describes the inheritance of genes from structures other than the nucleus.

Imprinting01:22

Imprinting

10.8K
Behavioral imprinting is observed in some newborn animals and occurs when they develop strong and specific attachments to another animal (usually a parent) following brief, early-life exposures. Offspring imprint onto parents within a brief period after birth or hatching; this time window is called the critical period. Once imprinting occurs, the bond established between the parents and their offspring is usually long-lasting.

Proofreading

8.5K
Synthesis of new DNA molecules is carried out by the enzyme DNA polymerase, which adds nucleotides on the daughter strand complementary to the template DNA strand. DNA polymerase has a higher affinity to add the correct base and ensures fidelity during DNA replication. Furthermore,  it exhibits proofreading activity during replication, using an exonuclease domain that cuts off incorrect nucleotides from the nascent DNA strand.
Errors During Replication are Corrected by the DNA Polymerase...

Symbiosis00:58

Symbiosis

36.7K
Symbiotic relationships are long-term, close interactions between individuals of different species that affect the distribution and abundance of those species. When a relationship is beneficial to both species, this is called mutualism. When the relationship is beneficial to one species but neither beneficial nor harmful to the other species, this is called commensalism. When one organism is harmed to benefit another, the relationship is known as parasitism. These types of relationships often...

Hardy-Weinberg Principle01:49

Hardy-Weinberg Principle

75.8K
Diploid organisms have two alleles of each gene, one from each parent, in their somatic cells. Therefore, each individual contributes two alleles to the gene pool of the population. The gene pool of a population is the sum of every allele of all genes within that population and has some degree of variation. Genetic variation is typically expressed as a relative frequency, which is the percentage of the total population that has a given allele, genotype or phenotype.

Area of Science:

  • Scientific publishing
  • Research ethics
  • Academic integrity

Background:

  • Multidisciplinary research teams are common in modern science.
  • Authorship allocation in multi-authored publications is a sensitive issue.
  • Inadequate discussion and education on authorship criteria can lead to conflicts.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To outline inappropriate authorship practices.
  • To discuss recent developments in authorship allocation principles.
  • To advocate for a fair authorship system in scientific publications.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of relevant literature and online resources.
  • Inclusion of author's personal experience and observations.
  • Review of existing documents and materials.

Main Results:

  • Authorship disputes can jeopardize research projects and collaborations.
  • Current ethical standards and practical guidelines for authorship are insufficient.
  • The issue of ethical authorship in multi-authored papers remains largely unresolved.

Conclusions:

  • Raising awareness and education on scientific communication and authorship ethics is essential.
  • Targeted education for young researchers and students can foster an ethical research environment.
  • Effective education is key to preventing scientific dishonesty and publication fraud, including authorship issues.
