Summary

99Tcm HMPAO-labelled granulocyte scintigraphy is a reliable method for detecting osteomyelitis, showing 100% sensitivity and 93% specificity. This technique offers advantages over 111In-labelled granulocytes for diagnosing bone infections.

Area of Science:

  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Diagnostic Imaging
  • Infectious Disease Imaging

Background:

  • Osteomyelitis diagnosis relies on various imaging modalities.
  • 111In-labelled granulocyte scintigraphy is a recognized sensitive and specific method.
  • 99Tcm offers potential advantages in radiolabelling, including convenience and lower radiation dose.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of 99Tcm HMPAO-labelled autologous granulocytes for diagnosing osteomyelitis.
  • To compare the diagnostic performance of 99Tcm HMPAO-labelled granulocytes with 111In-labelled granulocytes.

Main Methods:

  • 20 patients with suspected osteomyelitis underwent scintigraphy using autologous granulocytes labelled with 99Tcm HMPAO.
  • 12 of the patients had prosthetic joints.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Scan results were correlated with clinical, radiographic, microbiological, and histological findings.
  • Main Results:

    • Sensitivity for osteomyelitis detection was 100%.
    • Specificity for osteomyelitis detection was 93%.
    • These results compare favorably with those obtained using 111In-labelled granulocytes.

    Conclusions:

    • 99Tcm HMPAO-labelled granulocyte scintigraphy is a highly sensitive and specific method for diagnosing osteomyelitis.
    • This technique is at least as useful as 111In-labelled granulocytes and offers practical advantages.
