Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify independent factors associated with post-thyroidectomy ER visits and HR.
  • To analyze risk factors contributing to short-term morbidity after thyroid surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 8381 thyroidectomy patients from the CESQIP registry.
  • Multivariable logistic regression analysis to determine risk factors for ER visits and HR within 30 days of surgery.

Main Results:

  • Hypocalcemia was a primary reason for 21.9% of ER visits and 36.4% of HR.
  • A Body Mass Index (BMI) >40 kg/m² increased the risk of ER visits (OR 1.86) and HR (OR 1.94).
  • Longer surgical duration (>3 hours) and recurrent laryngeal nerve transection were significant risk factors for HR.

Conclusions:

  • Decreasing hypocalcemia rates and optimizing perioperative care for patients with high BMI are key strategies.
  • These interventions may lead to improved outcomes and reduced post-thyroidectomy complications.
