Summary

Acitretin, a retinoid, may cause trachyonychia (sandpaper nails). This nail condition resolved after discontinuing acitretin treatment, a finding not previously documented.

Trachyonychia is a nail matrix disease characterized by sandpaper-like nail roughness.
Retinoids can induce nail abnormalities due to their anti-proliferative properties.

Observation:

A single case of trachyonychia associated with acitretin use is presented.
Acitretin is a second-generation retinoid.

Findings:

This is the first reported case linking acitretin and trachyonychia.
Trachyonychia symptoms subsided after cessation of acitretin medication.

Implications:

Highlights a potential adverse effect of acitretin on nail health.
Suggests careful monitoring for nail changes in patients treated with acitretin.
