The gut microbiome is formed by a vast and diverse community of bacteria that colonizes our large intestine. Summary

The gut microbiome of Arab Kuwaitis is dominated by the Bacteroides genus, particularly the Bacteroides dorei/vulgatus group. This study provides key insights into the gut microbial composition of this underrepresented population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the gut microbiome composition of native Arab Kuwaiti adults.
  • To investigate the diversity and phylogenetic relationships within the Bacteroides genus in this population.

Main Methods:

  • 16S rRNA gene sequencing of the V3-V4 regions was performed on samples from 25 native adult Arab Kuwaitis.
  • Sequencing data were analyzed using DADA2 for amplicon sequence variant (ASV) calling.
  • Phylogenetic analysis was conducted on Bacteroides ASVs and type strains.

Main Results:

  • Firmicutes (48%) and Bacteroidetes (46%) were the dominant phyla.
  • Bacteroides was the most abundant genus in 22 out of 25 participants.
  • The Bacteroides dorei/vulgatus group was the most abundant phylogenetic group (11.91%) and present in all participants.

Conclusions:

  • Bacteroides is the predominant genus in the gut microbiome of Arab Kuwaiti adults.
  • The Bacteroides dorei/vulgatus group represents the main phylogenetic cluster within this population.
  • Nutritional status likely influences the observed microbiome composition.
