Survivors of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA) surgery have good long-term survival, comparable to the general population. Age significantly impacts outcomes, while comorbidities do not appear to affect long-term survival in these patients.
Area of Science:
- Vascular Surgery
- Aneurysm Research
- Public Health Outcomes
Background:
- Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA) has high early mortality.
- Long-term outcomes for rAAA survivors after open surgery are not well-documented.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the long-term survival of patients who underwent open surgery for rAAA.
- To compare the survival rates of rAAA survivors with the general population.
Main Methods:
- Population-based, observational long-term follow-up study (beyond 30-day mortality).
- Kaplan-Meier estimates and relative survival analyses were used.
- Data collected from patients treated between 2000 and 2014.
Main Results:
- 83 patients were eligible for long-term outcome analysis.
- Median crude survival was 6.5 years; men survived longer than women (7.3 vs. 5.4 years).
- Age was a significant factor in long-term survival, but comorbidities were not.
Conclusions:
- Long-term survival for rAAA survivors beyond 30 days is comparable to the general population.
- Cardiovascular comorbidities did not significantly impact long-term survival in this cohort.
