Insights

Growth arrest specific 8 (GAS8) and GAS8-AS1 show no significant expression differences in breast tumors compared to normal tissues. These genes do not appear to be involved in breast cancer development.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Growth arrest specific 8 (GAS8) and its antisense transcript (GAS8-AS1) are located in a frequently mutated region in breast cancer.
  • These genes have demonstrated tumor suppressor functions in other human cancers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of GAS8 and GAS8-AS1 in breast cancer pathogenesis.
  • To analyze the expression levels of GAS8 and GAS8-AS1 in breast tumor tissues versus adjacent non-tumoral tissues.

Main Methods:

  • Gene expression analysis of GAS8 and GAS8-AS1 using real-time PCR.
  • Comparison of transcript levels in 88 paired breast tumor and non-tumoral tissue samples.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in GAS8 and GAS8-AS1 expression were observed between tumoral and non-tumoral breast tissues (Fold changes = 1.53 and 1.71; P values = 0.28 and 0.14).
  • GAS8-AS1 transcript levels showed a significant correlation with estrogen receptor (ER) status (P = 0.01).
  • GAS8 gene expression was associated with a history of oral contraceptive use (P = 0.04).

Conclusions:

  • GAS8 and GAS8-AS1 do not appear to play a significant role in the pathogenesis of breast cancer, despite their known tumor suppressor functions in other malignancies.
  • The distinct roles of GAS8 and GAS8-AS1 in different tissues suggest tissue-specific functions.
