Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

6.0K
Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.
RSV is a retrovirus that contains two copies of a plus-strand  RNA genome. Its genome consists of four main open...

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Pathology
  • Pediatric Medicine

Background:

  • Rasmussen Encephalitis (RE) is a rare, chronic inflammatory neurological disease affecting one cerebral hemisphere.
  • Surgical intervention and pathological evaluation are crucial for diagnosing and understanding RE.
  • The presence of 'double pathology' in RE cases requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of double pathology in patients with Rasmussen Encephalitis.
  • To analyze surgical and pathological findings in RE cases.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of electronic medical records.
  • Identification of all Rasmussen Encephalitis cases undergoing surgery with pathological evaluation.
  • Study period: 2005-2019 at Children's Hospital Colorado.

Main Results:

  • The frequency of double pathology in surgically treated Rasmussen Encephalitis cases was determined.
  • Specific pathological findings associated with double pathology were identified.

Conclusions:

  • The study provides data on the occurrence of double pathology in Rasmussen Encephalitis.
  • Findings contribute to the understanding of the histopathological spectrum of RE.
